What Time's Spring Getting Here?
It's safe to say Spring has been slow coming at Wintershall this year. Normally by now, we'd expect plenty of flowers in bloom, leaves on the trees, and maybe even the first butterfly or Swallow of the year.
Sadly, it's not been the case, and the Easter Weekend has been pretty soggy. Despite this, the wildlife is trying hard prepare for the warmer days ahead. Plenty of birds are singing, with Blackbirds, Robins, Song Thrushes and Goldfinches particularly persistent on the gloomier days. Bullfinches too have been standing out - now's the best time to see this shy species, as they pair up and begin to think about nesting.
Some exciting birds have been seen recently too. A Snipe, a long-billed, wading bird, was surprisingly seen in the Gate Street Barn car park! A Barn Owl has been seen near Brookwell too, and the world's fastest living animal, the Peregrine Falcon, was seen flying over Broomy Down on Sunday.
On the warmer days, bumblebees have been on the wing, sometimes taking particular interest in the many daffodils around Gate Street Barn. A few Rabbits have already raised young do - did you know that baby Rabbits are called kittens? Some can be seen scampering around the fields at the moment.
Hopefully it won't be long until the first ducklings will be seen, and of course that first Swallow or singing Cuckoo - the true signs of springs long-awaited arrival.
